CHAI TEA MAKER
Project: Concept development for a new beverage appliance. Academic project - Collaboration TU Delft & Philips. Supervised by Johan Kok (TU Delft) and Sophie Shao (PHILIPS).
The design brief given by PHILIPS was: “ To design a new appliance that creates an inspirational way of enjoying beverages at home and provides consumers with a sensational experience.”
Website: Philips - TU Delft - Domestic Appliances design
The chosen beverage to base the project on was the typical Indian CHAI tea. This selection was based on two main reasons:
On the one hand, the chai making process is very inconvenient, messy, time consuming, inefficient and un-safe in some ergonomics aspects. On the other hand, the current market does not have a specific appliance to make chai. This, gives a great opportunity to PHILIPS to launch a totally innovative product in the market
CHAI-U is the new proposal for PHILIPS. It is an automatic and compact appliance that makes Chai Tea in a convenient and time effective way. It follows the original making process and keeps all the ingredients used in the more traditional way. It is able to make from 1 cup, for individual use, to 4 cups, giving emphasis to the social aspect of the Chai drinking ritual. In terms of sustainability, Chai-U would only heat the right amount of water needed in each situation. The new appliance avoids the current problems in the Chai process by having all the needed ingredients integrated on it.
