THE ECO WIG-WAM is an urban farming element that wants to bring the community in contact with Outdoor Sustainability. It was finalist in the " Materia Green Wall Competition 2012". [Amsterdam] www.materia.nl
Urban landscapes are often viewed as barren and cold scenes of concrete, asphalt and glass. They are portrayed as the opposite of the rural pastoral setting, rich in vegetation and greenery. However, in the biggest city there exists the possibility to reconnect with the natural world through gardening: The Eco-Wigwam.
The concept Eco Wigwam is an isolated green object with different surfaces of Vertical Green. The higher-level provides a permanent green area. The middle area is provided with panels for " Urban Gardening ", where people can grow their own vegetables / herbs / garden.
To improve the biodiversity, there is a " bee hotel " integrated in the top part of the Eco Wigwam . Bees play an essential role in the pollinating and the growth of the plants . The urbanization is increasingly making difficult for bees to nest .
The element is also fully self-sufficient. Rainwater is collected and stored . This is used for irrigation of the green panels. There is also an accessible water point on the side. Furthermore, the Eco Wigwam itself provides the necessary electricity for the irrigation pumping system through solar cells .
